Hula Popper for Massive Bass

The feeling one gets from the massive hits one can receive with a Hula Popper is unexplainable. Only another fisherman who has experienced it can understand this feeling of excitement. I have seen bass hit the Hula Popper so hard that their body leaves the water entirely. It sometimes reminds me of the clips from the Shark shows on Discovery Channel where the Great White sharks leap out of the water after seals and sea lions.

Although I use it around cover, I typically stay away from lily pads and thick moss on the water. The treble hooks are very strong and will snag onto anything in their path.

I will twitch or jerk the Hula popper, depending on the conditions, wait for about 10-20 seconds then do it again. You need to ensure you reel in your slack after each jerk or twitch so you are prepared to set the hook immediately.

The Hula Popper is one of my favorite lures and one of my two most productive top water baits. It is a very entertaining and exciting lure to use. The strikes can be massive and sometimes startling. I use it two different ways depending on the water clarity. Typically if the water is clear I will just twitch it lightly and if the water is dark then I pop that Hula Popper hard.

The use of the Hula popper requires patience. It needs to be fished slowly, around 10-20 seconds between jerks or twitching. The Hula Popper should be fished very slowly and can be jerked to create a loud popping noise creating lots of vibration in the water or it can be twitched lightly and allow the tail to do the work. I use both methods depending on the water condition and what the bass are keying on. When starting out, I will run the popper close to the bank and other cover. If the water is clear I will twitch it lightly to allow the flash of the skirt and movement of the lure to do all the work. If the water is darker I give it the harder jerk to illicit the loud popping noise and create more vibration so fish can home in on the bait in the darker water.
